Stump Grinding in Lloydminster
Old stumps ground 6–8 inches below grade and backfilled — ready for grass, garden, or new landscaping.
A leftover stump is more than an eyesore. It's a lawnmower obstacle, a trip hazard, a home for ants and wasps, and — for poplars especially — a source of stubborn suckers that keep popping up across the lawn for years. Digging one out by hand is brutal work, and pulling it with a truck tears up half the yard.
Stump grinding is the clean solution. Royal Tree Services grinds stumps across Lloydminster and area with dedicated grinding equipment that turns the stump and main surface roots into wood chips, well below lawn level, without wrecking the surrounding grass.
What's included in our stump grinding service
- Grinding the stump 6–8 inches below grade — deep enough to reseed lawn or lay sod over top
- Grinding out visible surface roots that snake across the lawn
- Backfilling the hole with the grinding mulch, mounded slightly to allow for settling
- Cleanup of chips and debris from the surrounding area
- Extra-depth grinding on request if you're planting or building in the same spot
When stump grinding is worth it
- You just had a tree removed and want the yard actually finished
- An old stump is in the way of a fence line, deck, garden, or new sod
- Poplar or lilac suckers keep sprouting from old roots
- Carpenter ants or wasps have moved into a rotting stump
- You're selling the house and the yard needs to show well
- Kids or guests keep tripping over a low, grass-hidden stump
Our process
Quoting a stump is usually as easy as a photo and a measurement — the width of the stump at ground level and roughly how tall it stands. On the day, we bring the grinder to the stump (it fits through most standard gates), check the area for hazards like buried lines and sprinkler heads, and grind the stump down in passes until it's 6–8 inches below the surrounding grade.
The grinding produces a mix of wood chips and soil. Most customers have us backfill the hole with it — it settles into decent topsoil within a season. If you'd rather have the chips hauled and the hole filled with clean topsoil, just say so when you book.
Safety and underground utilities
Before grinding we check the area for shallow utilities — gas, power, cable, and sprinkler lines can all run near old trees. If there's any doubt, we get locates done first (Alberta One-Call / Sask 1st Call are free). The grinder throws chips with real force, so we shield the work area and keep people and pets clear while the machine is running. As with all our work, we're fully insured.
What affects the price
Stump grinding in the Lloydminster area starts at $150 per stump. Pricing depends on:
- Stump diameter — measured at ground level, including flared roots
- Species and condition — old dry poplar grinds differently than fresh spruce
- How deep you need it ground (standard 6–8", deeper for replanting or construction)
- Access — a backyard stump behind a narrow gate takes longer than a front-yard one
- Quantity — grinding several stumps in one trip drops the per-stump price a lot
Stump Grinding FAQs
How much does stump grinding cost in Lloydminster?+
Stump grinding starts at $150 for a smaller stump with decent access. Big old poplar or spruce stumps run more, and multiple stumps done in one visit are cheaper per stump. Send a photo with a tape measure across the stump and we'll quote it quickly.
How deep do you grind the stump?+
Our standard is 6–8 inches below grade, which is plenty for grass, sod, or flower beds. If you're planting a new tree or pouring concrete in the same spot, tell us and we'll grind deeper.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?+
Yes, with a little prep. We grind deeper on request and recommend removing most of the chip-soil mix and bringing in fresh topsoil, since decomposing chips temporarily tie up nitrogen. Planting slightly to the side of the old stump location is even better.
Will grinding stop poplar suckers from coming back?+
Grinding removes the stump and the main root mass near it, which takes away most of the sucker source. Poplar roots that extend across the yard can still send up shoots for a season or two — mowing them off consistently exhausts the roots.
Does the grinder fit in my backyard?+
Almost always. Our grinding equipment fits through standard gates. If your yard has unusually tight access, mention it when you book and we'll confirm the machine will work.
